GXB-0001 WWI German Manfred von Richtofen – ‘The Red Baron’ Der Rote Kampfflierger first edition 1917 book

This item is listed for historical interest only. It is not for sale.
Item #17553

This WWI Manfred von Richtofen ‘The Red Baron’ Der Rote Kampfflierger first edition 1917 book is in overall good+ condition. All pages are present with only slight wear/ tattering to the edges and cover. There is also an inscription inside on the title page with a hand written cross next to Richtofen's name and April 1918 which was the month he was killed. It appears that this was done during the war due to the script type writing and condition of the ink. This was Richtofen’s autobiography written in October 1917 while he was recovering from a serious head injury following an engagement with Captain Donald Cunnell of 20 Squadron RFC (who was killed a few days later). Von Richtofen wrote the book on the instructions of the German propaganda division and was heavily censored and edited. He later repudiated the book saying that it was ‘too arrogant’ and that he was ‘no longer that kind of person’ but he was not able to produce a second and revised edition as he was killed the following April.
