Item #30546
WWI German "Hate Belts" are souvenir belts. There is a lot of folklore with these belts that they were made of a collection of items from soldiers that you killed or considered "kills." As with most things the simplest answer is usually the most likely. While yes, this probably did happen most of these belts should be considered souvenir belts. Especially considering that many of these belts were being collected by Allied soldiers and with many of these belts there are both German and Allied buttons on them. So unless they killed fellow Allied soldiers I think they were souvenirs. This particular belt is a dark brown and has 38 buttons, pins or cockades. The belt is a size 31" to 36" with an officer's belt buckle. This belt is in nice condition and is still malleable and supple. Interesting piece and the first hate belt we have had in several years.
