Sale SW-012, Mexican War / Civil War US M1840 Iron Hilt Cavalry Saber

Quantity:
New Price:  $799.95
Was:  $899.95

Item #11242

Known as the “Wrist Breaker” due to its heavy blade, the 1840 was superseded by the lighter M1860, although both models were used throughout the Civil War. This Iron Hilt version is rarer than the brass one and Tiffany & Co. was a major importer of these from Germany. This one is unmarked, indicating that it too is most likely an import. The heavy approx. 35” blade has some patina & light rust spotting, but no significant pitting. There are a few dings to the unsharpened cutting edge. The hilt has a patina coating as does the scabbard, which also has a few moderate dings. The wire wrapped grip has one significant age crack near the pommel. The wire wrap is fully intact. Overall this sword rates as a good+.
