Item #19623
This is a great first model WWII US Navy Aviators survival vest knife. During the Second World War, the Colonial Knife Company, in
conjunction with the Navy Department, designed a new survival knife for flight
crews. It was designed as both a weapon and a miniature machete. It featured a
4.5" blade, as well as, a saw blade capable of cutting through plexiglass,
aluminum and wood. The finish was black oxide to prevent rust and eliminate reflections.
This variant, with bail, has a locking blade that is marked "Colonial,
Prov. R.I." and is complete with the canvas pouch that is marked
"U.S.N." to the top flap. A cut out for present for the protruding
bail. The overall length is approximately 6" and 15 5/8" in complete
length with blade open. Of Note: See Cole page 197. This particular knife is in fair to good condition. It is an early Mk. 1 but does have some damage from heat and rust. In two spots the black plastic grips show exposure to heat. There are small spots of pitting but overall it is in good condition. The original USN marked case is included however the snap is rusty and has pulled through the front of the pouch. Additionally the stitched hole for the knife loop at the top is somewhat tattered. Overall a nice piece.
